The Kooks and YAWN at The Fillmore [Photographs]

This past Tuesday, The Kooks played their final stop on their North American tour, and boy, did they go out with a bang. Things got going quick with opener YAWN. Forget the name, the Chicago base band are the Kooks favorite up-and-comer and rightfully so. The post-Vampire Weekend band take the style notes from the collegiate wunderkinds, but [...]

Adam Yas for President or Just Queen’s Anniversary

Local musician, Adam Yas, is one of the semi-finalists – and the only one in the running from San Francisco – for The Queen Extravaganza. As part of Queen’s 40th anniversary, Roger Taylor is taking on the role of producer and music director and on the search for vocalists and musicians to play Queen songs on a national [...]

The Go Round “Angela” [SOTD]

I have to admit, I am a little impartial to this song being that it and I share a name. However, I was pleasantly surprised. I spent the horrifying years of my childhood being followed around by bad renditions of The Rolling Stones’ “Angie.” While The Go Round is nothing like and will never be The Rolling Stones, [...]

Big Harp “Everybody Pays” [SOTD]

Big Harp are yet another adorable indie rock husband and wife team, but notably err on the side of folky country rather than abstract indie music. The blend of indie feel with country spirit and unbridled saloon-drawling blues produce a Dylan-esque purity that has been unrivaled by many in a long time. Download Mp3: Big Harp -”Everybody Pays” [...]

Motopony – “King of Diamonds” [VIDEO]

Motopony is another great Pacific Northwest group. Bands from the rain-drenched region have really mastered the fresh melancholy clarity inherent with a place that only sees sunshine 71 days a year. Motopony takes hints of Death Cab for Cutie without drowning in whine. The video is a bit literal, overblown rockstar costumes and the Las Vegas Strip but [...]

[Photos] An Evening with Broken Social Scene at the Fillmore

“Tell people what you’ve seen here tonight.” I will Kevin Drew. I will. This year, I’ve seen a handful of performances that I could easily call the best I’ve ever seen: Arcade Fire headlining Coachella, Fleet Foxes at the Greek in Berkeley, Explosions in the Sky at both The Fox and Great American, Battles at Bottom of the [...]

[SOTD] The Rosebuds “The Woods”

“The Woods” is an escalating, soul-thumping fresh-sounding track that is cathartic in desperation and honest enough to just yell “Oh Good God!” Its running, frenetic pace is brought in by the organization of the melody and synchronization of noise. Fantastic and wonderful. Download Mp3: The Roseboods “The Woods” [Audio clip: view full post to listen]

[REVIEW] IAMDYNAMITE @ The Regency Ballroom 9/16

What I like about IAMDYNAMITE, despite the name and band they opened for (Blue October), is that they are really just good rock music. It is refreshing in a scene full of synthed-out cookie cutter indie rock to hear a band that plays so loud they shake the floor, that gets an audience moving, and genuinely enjoys playing [...]

[Video] Villagers at La Maroquinerie

Villagers’ performance at La Maroquinerie in Paris is a fantastic hour long set perfect for listening while working. Featuring several track from their 2010 debut release on Domino Records, Becoming a Jackal, their folk rock performance is soothing, then gripping, and melodically entrancing. Check out this live review of Villagers of their performance at The Rickshaw Stop. Below [...]
