Some might ask why Yasiin chose to change his name after building it to one of the most recognizable names in music. He gives the following answer:
“Mos Def is a name that I built and cultivated over the years, it’s a name that the streets taught me, a figure of speech that was given to me by the culture and by my environment, and I feel I’ve done quite a bit with that name. But it’s time to expand and move on.”
For him its all about expansion. His music now is not a departure from what we are familiar with; it is more of an expression of his growth and life experiences beyond Mos Def. His songs have always been filled with some of the most inventive and profound lyrics in hip hop. Unlike some others, Yasiin Bey’s music is as much about the surface beauty as the deeper meaning of the words.
