The obscure, mutating black box mysteriously manifests itself into the desires of its beholder. Like the shifting image, Foxygen’s style in unpredictable. Members Jonathan Rado and Sam France are two eccentric Californians that started their music careers together in high school thanks to their shared obsession with psychedelic lo-fi San Francisco-based band, Brian Jonestown Massacre. Their audible style is more similar to The Kinks or The Smiths, with regularly unstructured psyche-pop tracks that possess subtle elements of both funk and jazz.
“Shuggie” is the group’s absurd new single (the first from their upcoming second album) and they recently released an inventive black and white video to promote it. Directed by Ulysses///Onasis, the video depicts an obscure, multidimensional cube that morphs into various images until it eventually shatters. Their second album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, will be released 21st January 2013 via Jagjaguwar. The band is coming to San Francisco less than a month later to perform at the Great American Music Hall on February 13, 2013.
