Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Tiny Desk Concert
Fans of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘ recent hit “Thrift Shop” might be surprised by the group’s earlier single, “Same Love.” In support of gay rights, Macklemore raps “If I was gay, I’d think that hip hop hates me / Have you read the Youtube comments lately / ‘That’s gay’ is dropped daily.” As Bob Boilen of NPR puts it “tears and laughter in the span of about 15 minutes — that’s what’s so astonishing about these Macklemore & Ryan Lewis songs.” It’s true. Macklemore’s strength lies in his ability to seamlessly rap about gay marriage, poke fun at indie materialism, while maintaing both levity and honesty. This Tiny Desk Concert performance adds warmth to “Same Love” with a live trumpet and “Thrift Shop” with Macklemore’s bubbling excitement. Next Monday (12/10), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will take the stage at The Regency Ballroom (which is sold–for a second time in just three months).
