[SOTD] ASAP Rocky – Fuckin’ Problem ft. Drake, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz(Review)

10/22/2012

With the release of the star-studded single “Fuckin’ Problem,” the only fuckin’ problem that can come to mind is how it’s possible to have four of the hottest rappers out right now on one song and still sound so subpar. Superstar emcees Drake, ASAP Rocky, Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz all lend their voices to the 40 & C. Papi-produced bass heavy track off Rocky’s solo album LONGLIVEA$AP, a concoction which can only spell magic — or at least presumably.

One after another, each rapper seems to build off the previous rappers flow, a sort of redundant popcorn reading trade off that leaves the listener in a bore of irrelevant and typical rap lyrics, offering nothing really groundbreaking or awe-worthy. The chorus itself sounds as if it was recorded in one take with 2 Chainz exasperating the same line over and over until it begins to just sound like an obnoxious chant.

Following the footsteps of crew-featuring tracks and albums, a las Cruel Summer and the ASAP Mob tape, the track only confirms the misconception that just because you have so many good artists on one song does not equate a good song. Regardless, the mere factor that the track itself contains the presence of all four hip hop heavyweights will undoubtedly give it a sign of approval in most hip hop circles. A hip hop double standard which has become quite common in this day and age.
