Nick Waterhouse at Bimbo’s This Saturday

“Whatever you do don’t call them a throwback,” says Nick Waterhouse’s publicist Eric Dresner.  No, they’re not throwbacks–they’re pioneers. Shaking, rattling and rolling, Waterhouse is paving the way for a 50s style movement with a twist. Already gaining traction, recently selling out the Verdi Club and featured on an Acura commercial, he’s scheduled to perform this Saturday at Bimbo’s. Don’t take my word for it, but listen to our writer Victoria who saw his performance last, “This may be the next big movement in San Francisco, and I’m rooting for it.”

Before his show this Saturday, we asked Waterhouse a few questions about his style and plans–because well, I personally could use some tips.

SF Critic (SFC): How did you conceive your image?

Nick Waterhouse: I saw photos of Frank O’Hara, Fred Cash of The Impressions, Roy Haynes, and Dustin Hoffman in Brooks Brothers button down shirts. When something looks good to you as kid, you naturally follow your instincts. I just started buying clothes based on what struck my fancy and looked good to me, not as an image.

SFC: Do you see yourself as a part of a movement or creating one?

Nick Waterhouse: I see myself as staying true to what moves me. What I feel driven to do and when fashions or trends rub up against that it just makes what I do a little more palatable.

SFC: What style pointers can you give fans in attendance (considering: clothes, attitude, and background on the musical style)?

Nick Waterhouse: Don’t dress a part, dress yourself. Keep an open mind and drop your preconceived notions, and don’t worry that there are any rules. Musically, mentally, stylistically. Also, don’t be afraid to dress like an adult.
