This past weekend, The xx performed “Angels” at Bestival 2012. From The xx’s upcoming album, Coexist, the tight performance replicated the minimalism perfectly. Vocalist Romy Madley Croft’s voice creeps upon the guttural tones of Oliver Sim’s guitar, in a whisper of uncertainty as she sings “I think I’m ready, as long as you’re with me, being as in love with you as I am.” Having been fortunate enough to catch The xx during their last tour in San Francisco (at the Great American Music Hall), the dynamics between Croft and Sim are completely reflective of my experience: caught in their own worlds, entirely expressive yet completely disconnected from the crowd lost in a reflexive past feeling.
