Yeasayer brought their new ‘Fragrant World‘ tour to the Fox Theater this past Saturday evening, promoting their new album that carries the same name. Opening the night was Daughn Gibson, who is scheduled to release an album next year with Sub Pop (definitely keep an eye out). When it was time for Yeasayer, the crowd welcomed them with open arms. Following last year’s phenomenal, sold-out performance at The Fillmore, it wasn’t easy to get a ticket for Saturday. Having been lucky enough to catch both shows, I can easily say the second time around was even better than the first.

Mixing in a fair dose of both newer and older content, Yeasayer used their familiar stage setup of glowing lights and flashing strobes to accentuate their music on a visual level. The group’s use of texture is what sets them apart: they have the ability to engage the listener with their familiar chord progressions and time signatures, but their use of layered instrumentation, psych-like samples and aggregations give them a sound unlike any other. New cuts such as “Longevity” and “Henrietta“ were not overshadowed by crowd favorites such as “2080″ and “Madder Red.” Playing for nearly an hour and a half, the group thanked the crowd and claimed the Fox Theater was the “most beautiful fucking place we’ve ever played at,” and said they would be happy to return if we would have them. We should be seeing them soon.

You can catch the group out on tour for the rest of the year, as they continue to travel throughout North America and before heading out overseas to Berlin. They’ll play select dates though out Europe, before heading back to the states to finish up in Washington and Philadelphia. Their new album ‘Fragrant World‘ is available everywhere.
