B.o.B ( aka Bobby Ray) released yesterday his mixtape, EPIC: Every Play Is Crucial, in anticipation for his upcoming album in March. I’ve only had the chance to listen to a few tracks, but it sounds stronger than his previous mixtape (read our review of B.o.B. No Genre). Whereas No Genre showed the polarizing styles (pop vs. aggressive underground) of B.o.B., on EPIC: Every Play Is Crucial he seems to find a balance on tracks like “Perfect Symetry,” and “High.” The beats like his debut are pop infectious and listeners friendly, even sampling Phoenix on “Wrong.” And where “Wrong” sounds vaguely too pop like “Magic” with River Cuomo, “New York New York” sounds like a combination of Jay-Z’s “New York” and Eminem’s “Airplanes Part 2,” which isn’t great (by any means)–but isn’t over the top either. With so many star studded guest verses from Eminem, Big K.R.I.T., Mos Def and more–this is definitely worth a listen.
