Das Racist, the duo known independently as ‘Kool A.D’ and ‘Heems,’ backed by hype-man ‘Dap,’ performed a lively and fulfilling set, on Friday July 29th at the Mezzanine in San Francisco. The group will tour from California to Florida over the course of the next few months, as they gear up for their first full length album, titled Relax, which is scheduled to be released in September of this year. Local favorites, BlackMahal opened with an amazing set, following newcomer, Safe. BlackMahal’s energetic and eclectic sound set the tone nicely, as the crowd thrived on the quirky, yet effective sounds of Das Racist, who factor many unconventional and deliberate styles into their delivery and songwriting. The popular “Whos’ that? Brooown!” and “You Oughta Know” thumped and crawled. The group embellished and played off of each others style, which had the effect of honesty, while still using clever and precise wordplay.
The group heads out east, to share the stage with Diplo at the Mad Decent Block party in Philly on August 6th. They’ll wrap up their summer by playing the AfroPunk Festival on August 27th, which features the acts of Cee Lo Green, Santigold, and Toro y Moi, among others.
