[Throwbacks] Johnny Cash and Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen Cousin Cole

Digging up classics from Bruce Springsteen or Johnny Cash isn’t hard, but adding a twist on “classic” makes it all that more interesting. “I’m on Fire” was already an amazing song by Springstreen that became even better when Cousin Cole added his late night touch. I first heard this track at a bar, and before I could place Springsteen’s voice, I approached the DJ and asked, “Wow, who’s this?” So now that YOU know, let me add, Cousin Cole is a DJ from New York on Flagrant Fowl Records–check him out.

“Hurt” was written by Trent Reznor (NIN) for his 1994 album, The Downward Spiral, and was covered by Johnny Cash in 2002. It was one of Cash’s final acclaimed singles before his death. The single was released on Cash’s album, American IV: The Man Comes Around. Many (if only because of “Walk The Line”) know that Johnny Cash lived a rough life, battling his own inner demons and drinking problems, which only adds to the weightiness of his tone and the lyrics of “Hurt.”
