The wolves were clawing at the door. She lay on her bed, hearing the scratches and growls coming from the other side, staring blankly at the stucco ceiling. “One might have been lost.” In this whirlwind of 2010, all she can do now is rest as her story unfolds.

She was the youngest of four. The first to rise each morning, but the last to leave. Her two older brothers were bigger than her. She passed most of her life unnoticed. At times she’d cry until thick red bags grew under her eyes. Her eldest brother, Joseph, would brush her bangs behind her ear and tell her “It’s okay sleepyhead.” In that moment her eyes would sparkle.

Things began to change when she joined choir in high school. “I hope you don’t mind that I put down words how wonderful life is,” she belted to the audience as shivers ran up their spines. Before they told her she should be a librarian. Told her it was okay she was shy. But as she took the stage that night, an honesty in her tone, a strength in her voice, a poise in her eyes silenced the crowd.

The audience followed her like the tide, pulling her in, grasping for more. “Encore! Encore!” The clamor continued to hush the droning noises of her tour bus as she traveled around the UK. As she gazed out the windows, circling her sweet disposition, was a feeling of joy and doubt.
She could hear the snarls. “All these covers she’s hiding under–will she come out and show her true colors,” the critics asked, “Is she really all that good?”
