Dublin, Ireland’s Villagers performed at the Rickshaw Stop the other night to a mixed crowd that included cheering Irish, trannies and singing-every-lyric fans. Their debut album Becoming a Jackal was released on Domino Records earlier this year to critical acclaim, which included a Mercury Prize nomination. Songwriter Conor O’Brien, backed by his full band, is a folk force to be reckoned with. There were moments that were so intense that you’d mistake the post-modern folk for raw rock n’ roll. Jaws were dropped speechless with wide eyes. The live performance of Villagers packs severely more punch than the album. When I asked the girl next to me what she thought, she took several moments before she was able to look me in the eye, and with a smirk finally said “I didn’t expect this. I’m blown away.” This is a rare act. A class bred. Villagers with be touring the states for the next three weeks with Ra Ra Riot.
